The motorcycle community is filled with veterans who find a sense of freedom from their worries in a ride across the winding roads. But not all get to experience that.
Thousands of veterans have had at least one major limb amputation, and others suffer life-changing injuries that can limit their ability to operate a motorcycle. Now, local Air Force veteran Jeff Powell is trying to fill that void by building modified bikes.
He began working to create Veterans 48, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in 2020 and is now building the first bike — a 1948 Harley Davidson Panhead, from which the organization derives its name. The “48” also is a nod to the 48-star American flag soldiers fought under during World War II.
